One of Britain’s most recognisable public figures, Michael Portillo, has announced he’ll be visiting Doncaster in 2026 as part of his nationwide tour, with tickets now on sale.
From the corridors of Westminster to the tracks of the world’s most iconic railways, Michael Portillo has lived a life rich in experience, transformation, and storytelling.
He’ll be appearing at Doncaster Dome on Friday 9 October 2026 as part of his ‘A Life of Two Halves’ tour, which will see the former Secretary of State and celebrated broadcaster share poignant, humorous and insightful reflections from his extraordinary journey.
Born to a refugee father who fled the Spanish Civil War, Portillo’s early life was shaped by resilience and compassion. His parents met while caring for refugee children in England, laying the foundation for a life steeped in public service and cultural exploration.
As a politician, Portillo served under Margaret Thatcher, ran for the leadership of the Conservative Party, and famously lost his seat in one of the most talked-about moments in British political history. But his story didn’t end there. Reinventing himself as a broadcaster, he became a household name, known for his sharp political commentary and beloved railway documentaries.
Kevin McCoy, events and sales manager at Doncaster Dome, which is managed by Doncaster Culture and Leisure Trust (DCLT) said: "We’re already looking forward to welcoming British legend Michael Portillo to the Dome in 2026. His story is one of transformation, resilience and curiosity. Whether you’re fascinated by politics, history, or simply love a good travel tale, it’s going to be a brilliant night."
Audiences can expect candid anecdotes about his time in government, including his reflections on Thatcher’s leadership and the shifting nature of political power.
He’ll also delve into his unexpected television career, including the time he played a single mum, and share tales from his travels across Spain, the USA, India, and beyond.
Tickets start from £30 and are available via: https://www.dclt.co.uk/the-dome/whats-on/michael-portillo-a-life-of-two-halves/
