Return of the Robins
Robins are marvellous for many reasons, but here are our top five Robin facts!
Every robin has a distinct chest pattern, which is like a fingerprint. This unique feature allows people with a sharp eye to tell individual robins apart.
Robins are famous for being amongst the first birds to start singing in the morning and the last to quiet down at night. They even sing throughout the winter, using their song to defend their feeding territories.
These adaptable birds have been documented nesting in some truly odd spots, including functional post boxes and unused barbeques, demonstrating their resourcefulness!
Robins are particularly sensitive to the colour red, which helps them spot and defend red berries, their favourite food, and is also believed to be a key factor in their aggressive defence of territory against other robins, who also sport a red breast.
Robins have learned to associate gardening activity with an easy meal. When you disturb the soil, you unearth worms and insects, and the robin will often perch nearby, watching intently, ready to swoop down and grab a snack once you move on.
