The annual Dragon Boat challenge is becoming a regular feature on Doncaster’s tourism calendar and returns for its third year in 2012.
Doncaster Tourism and Doncaster St George’s Rotary Club is once again working with Gable Events to bring the Dragon Boat Challenge to Lakeside Doncaster.
Organisers are inviting businesses from around Doncaster to take part in the Water Bonanza that promises a fun filled day of Dragon Boat Racing.
Dragon Boat racing is an ancient Chinese tradition and the fastest growing water activity in Britain today - as well as the most fun.
Up to 10 people paddle each 30’ boat with a drummer at the front beating time and a helm at the tail steering a straight course. No previous experience is required, just plenty of team spirit.
In Chinese tradition, each year is dedicated to a specific animal. The Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Rat, Boar, Rabbit, Dog, Rooster, Ox, Tiger, Snake, and Ram are the twelve animals that are part of this tradition. In 2012, the Dragon is welcomed back after the 2011 year of the Rabbit. Each of these animals is thought to bestow their characteristics to the people born in their year.
The Year of the Dragon will be marked by excitement, unpredictability, exhilaration and intensity. People respond to the spirit of the Dragon with energy, vitality and unbridled enthusiasm, often throwing all caution to the wind: the Dragon is all about drama.
The Dragon Boat event is open to all and crews are expected to battle it out over the 200m course, watched by crowds of spectators, to be crowned champions on the day.
If you can’t find your ‘sea feet’ then do not worry, there is still plenty for you to experience at this fun filled family event.
Spectators will be treated to the thrill of the race as teams compete against each other, a spectacular display from a Chinese Lion Dancers, Fun fair rides, Craft and charity stalls as well as themed food stalls.
Doncaster Lakeside offers a superb venue for racing and a fabulous day is guaranteed for spectators and competitors alike.
