Doncaster singer tackles The Young Ones, for the slightly older ones

Doncaster based singer, August Charles, has worked with older people from the town to deliver a cover of Cliff Richards The Young Ones.

Doncaster based singer, August Charles, has worked with older people from the town to deliver a cover of Cliff Richards The Young Ones.

The single was covered as part of All Eyes on Culture, a project that saw b:friend neighbours, from the local charity, select songs for two local musicians to sing.

As part of the project, commissioned by Right Up Our Street, with support from Arts Council England and DMBC, August was given the track to listen to and he then recorded a cover for the neighbours to enjoy.

He said: “I know it might be hard to believe but I’d never heard this track. I loved it and am now a fan. It was a great project to be a part of bringing the younger and older community together through music.”

All Eyes on Culture was one of seven projects that took place in Doncaster during June commissioned by Right Up Our Street to ensure that artist work continued to engage with people in the town during the lockdown period.

Mike Niles, from b:friend: said “It is really nice that at a time when older neighbours in Doncaster have been forced to self-isolate and disconnect for their own health these artists are connecting and offering companionship through music.”

August has now released his own single, ‘Take Me Away’ which is available now on all streaming platforms.

With the track August is inviting listeners to escape from the trials and tribulations of everyday life in these difficult times.

He said: “Take Me Away is a fusion of jazz and soul. In times like this we all need to lose ourselves a little in music.

“It has been a great journey to get to this point and I’m so pleased to be in a position to release this single.”

In 2019 August was scouted by the respected Higher Rhythm Talent Development Program. Working alongside renowned studio engineer Paul Littlewood and multi-award winning producer Andy Seward, August benefited from high-quality recording and mentoring facilities.

“It was here, in Doncaster, that I transformed my potential into tangible achievements – such as 'Take Me Away’,” added August.

August is a triple threat singer-songwriter-producer. August’s unique style has a variety of roots. His inspirations lie in Soul, RnB, Pop and in the rich ZamRock movement of the mid-70s.

With a flawless falsetto like no one else you’ve ever heard before, August sings softly about escape, enchanting the ears of the listeners and suspending them in serenity.

This newcomer shows immense talent, comparable to that of Sampha, Laura Mvula, King Krule and Frank Ocean.

‘Take Me Away’ is a dreamy fusion of jazz and soul, centred on August Charles’ mellifluous voice and complemented by a flutter of scintillating piano.
