Brodsworth Hall & Gardens Wins Top Garden Awards
Brodsworth Hall and Gardens, near Doncaster, has won not one but two prestigious Yorkshire in Bloom awards.
English Heritage is delighted to announce that the gardens at Brodsworth Hall have won Gold in the category ‘Country Houses, Estates, Parks and Gardens’, then went on to win ‘Overall Winners’ in the same category, followed by ‘Best Overall Visitor Attraction’ for Yorkshire in Bloom. Head Gardener Daniel Hale, accepted the awards at a glittering awards ceremony at York Racecourse on Tuesday 12th September.
The awards are one of the premier garden accolades in the country and Dan, who is originally from Barnsley, was delighted to accept on behalf of his team. He said: “This unique 20 acre site at Brodsworth has been a labour of love for us all, the gardens team and our volunteers, who have helped us craft and maintain a spectacular garden. The formal gardens, with their own unique planting design, the extensive topiary beds, fern dell (the only one of its kind in the country), rose gardens, woodland areas and lawns, present a challenge to ensure the gardens remain in tiptop condition, providing interest and variety to our visitors throughout the seasons. Throughout much of the garden, we adhere to the traditional Victorian designs and plantings, ensuring that the heritage of the garden remains at the forefront of all we do. This award will have pride of place at Brodsworth and we hope our visitors will continue to enjoy the gardens throughout the autumn.”
Yorkshire in Bloom Judges’ comments include: “Visiting the site in glorious sunshine was always going to help show this entry in all its glory but the judges were simply blown away by the stunning grounds and incredibly high level of maintenance displayed here. The knowledge of horticulture applied here is at its highest level and is testament to the hard work and dedication of both paid staff and volunteers.”
Brodsworth Hall & Gardens was also the recipient of the Highly Commended Custodian Award by Horticulture Week magazine earlier this year, and sparked national interest when English Heritage revealed what they consider ‘the poshest outdoor privy’ to the nation – a unique conservation project within the gardens which was launched in the spring of this year.
