The Trans Pennine Trail is the first long distance multi-user trail in the UK. Stretching the breadth of Northern England from the Irish Sea to the North Sea, it is a journey of 215 miles (346km) taking in the Peak District National Park. It is a purpose built route for walkers and cyclists with many miles available for horse riding. Much of the trail follows off road paths - completely traffic free and suitable for families. Wheelchair access is possible on many parts of the trail.
The trail offers a wide contrast of landscape from deep rural areas to river estuaries and towns and cities, where former industrial sites have become woodlands and nature reserves.
From the Dearne Valley area the trail takes a route along the River Don and through Sprotbrough, following peaceful riverside and railway paths to the outskirts of Doncaster town centre. Traffic free paths and quiet lanes take the Trans Pennine Trail northwards through sleepy villages until it picks up the New Junction Canal for several miles between the small villages of Braithwaite and Sykehouse.
