Humberhead and Peatlands

National Nature Reserve

A vast area of wilderness incorporating parts of Thorne, Goole and Crowle Moors together with nearby Hatfield Moors. These are remnants of a formerly more extensive area of wetland which occupied the flood plain of the Humberhead Levels several thousand years ago. They form the largest complex of lowland raised bogs in Britain.

The varied habitat of the Moors supports a huge number of different invertebrates with over 3000 recorded species, including Large Heath Butterfly. Bird species include Common Teal, Common Snipe, Winchat and the rare European Nightjar.

Group visits and guided walks by prior arrangement with English Nature. Estimated time to visit, minimum of 2 hours.

Due to the difficult nature of the terrain, the reserve is unsuitable for disabled access.

The Peatlands Way

The Peatlands Way is a 45 mile circular footpath route in North Lincolnshire and South Yorkshire linking the historic settlements of Thorne, Crowle, Belton, Epworth, Haxey, Wroot, Kirk Bramwith and Sykehouse.
