Countryside Activities

January - March 2011

Throughout the year, Doncaster Council runs a series of varied events exploring Doncaster's countryside, wildlife and heritage. We offer activities for all ages and interests, including guided walks, children's events, family outings, stories, wildlife events, Doncaster Country Fair and more. So find an event that suits you, come along and enjoy yourself!

And remember when you arrive at an activity, look out for the Council's experienced activity leaders - whatever the weather, they'll be there!

Walking for Health

Every Thursday, 10:00am -11:30am

Gentle strolling is a good start for people who are not used to exercise - it is one of the best ways for people to become more active. Walking for Health has been developed in partnership with Doncaster Primary Care Trust. Meet at the Community Environment Centre, Sandall Beat Wood, off Leger Way.

Junior Rangers

Saturday 15 January10am – 12 noon

Fun activities for 8-11 year olds from pond dipping and shelter building, to games and crafts.  Membership needed.  Please phone the team on 01302 300798 to join.

Teen Rangers

Saturday 15 January, 2pm - 4pm
Saturday 12 February, 2pm - 4pm
Saturday 12 March, 2pm - 4pm

Bush craft and survival skills, wildlife identification, practical woodland management and much more for young people aged 12-15. Membership needed. £1 subs per young person.
Meet at Sandall Beat Community Environment Centre, Sandall Beat Wood, off Leger Way.

Green Guardians

Friends of Sandall Beat Wood

Every Thursday, 1pm - 3pm

Friends are local volunteers who meet regularly to carry out practical woodland management at this important Local Nature Reserve.  Just bring yourself and your enthusiasm - we'll provide a warm welcome. Meet at Sandall Beat Community Environment Centre, Sandall Beat Wood, off Leger Way.

New Year Stroll - Parks, Fields, Woods and a Hilltop (4.5 Miles)

Sunday 9 January, 10.30am - 1pm

Explore your doorstep countryside on this rural trail at the edge of town and spot some of our feathered winter visitors.

Meet at the car park, Sandall Beat Wood, off Leger Way.

Appropriate clothing and footwear required. Dogs welcome.

Snowdrop Saunter (4 Miles)

Sunday 6 February, 10.30am - 1pm

All welcome to join a winter wander along the canal to see this year’s first snowdrops and visit the Craft Fayre in St Mary’s Church at Kirk Bramwith. Organised in partnership with St Mary’s Church, Kirk Bramwith.
Meet at the swing-bridge, Fordstead Lane, Barnby Dun (roadside parking in the village only).  
Appropriate clothing and footwear required. Dogs welcome.


Half Term Family Fun - Woodland Wonders

Monday 21 February, 10am - 12noon, 1 - 3pm

Children aged 4-11 years. Come on down to the woods today and have a go in the Story Bus plus join us for a fantasy walk plus discover woodland wildlife.  If you are aged 11 years or younger, bring a grown up, a smile and your wellies. All children must be accompanied by an adult. Organised in partnership with Doncaster Library Service.

Half Term Family Fun - Woodland arts and crafts

Wednesday 23 February, 1 - 3.30pm

Have a go at some of our artful woodland activities – outdoors if weather allows. Children up to 11 years welcome – a parent or guardian must accompany all children. £1 per child.

Half Term Family Fun - Just for the Birds

Thursday 24 February, 1 - 3.30pm

Join us to build a new home for this year’s brood of birds in your garden.  Price £2.50 per box. Prizes for the best-built boxes. Children 5 to 11 years welcome – a  parent or guardian must accompany all children.

Forest Survival

Friday 25 February, 1 - 4pm

Ever wanted to be Ray Mears or Bear Grylls? Shelter building, wild foods, camp fire cooking and traditional crafts for young people aged 16-18 years. £1 per person. To book contact the Community Environment Centre on 01302 300798.

Walking for Health Volunteer Walk Leader Training Day

Friday 18 March,  9.30am - 3.30pm

A one-day course for anyone over the age of 18 who is willing and able to lead walks in the community. We offer the chance to learn new skills with like-minded people plus ongoing support. Please contact us for details and to book your place.

Book in advance. Appropriate clothing and footwear required. Please bring a packed lunch. Wheelchair friendly activity.
