Sporting Heritage

Passion for sport has been running through the veins of Doncastrians for centuries – attend one of our sporting events and you’ll soon see why!

If you mention the name of Doncaster in far flung places, the chances are that someone will think of horse racing and the St Leger.

But if you think that sport is just about horse racing, then think again! Doncaster Rovers is one of the very oldest football clubs in England, founded in 1879 making them older than Liverpool, Chelsea and Arsenal! From humble origins in the “Plant” locomotive works, and using the Salutation Inn as their changing rooms, Doncaster Rovers now plays in the modern, 15,000 seater Keepmoat Stadium in their famous red and white hooped shirts, with a fiercely loyal following! And if you are a loyal supporter or even just a football fan, why not pop along to see the fine collection of Rovers’ memorabilia at Doncaster Museum.

Also playing at the Keepmoat Stadium is Doncaster Rugby League Football Club, while rugby union fans should head to the Castle Park stadium. The Doncaster Knights play here, with a growing following of fans. There’s also a Doncaster Rovers Ladies team, the Doncaster Rovers Belles, plus the Doncaster Cricket ClubDoncaster Hockey Club and many more sporting clubs besides, in and around Doncaster. We’re sure that you’ll find one of your favourite spectator sports to give you a great day out!

If you’d prefer to be part of the action instead of just watching, why not learn the art of polo at the Vale of York Polo Club. Non-riders are welcome and equipment is provided – they even cater for corporate days out, as well as stag and hen parties! And of course, we have plenty of golf courses in Doncaster’s surrounding countryside.
