To commemorate its 150th anniversary, the Minster Church of St George, Doncaster is delighted to announce it's calender of events for the forthcoming year. Standing on the site of the original medieval church, which was destroyed by fire in 1853, Doncaster Minster was completed in 1858 by Sir George Gilbert Scott (the architect of St Pancras Railway Station, London). It is the most cathedral like of Scott’s parish churches and is crowned by a magnificent 170ft tall bell tower. It is reputed to be one of the best showcases of Gothic architecture in the country and it was described by former Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjeman as "Victorian Gothic at its very best". Dominating the Doncaster skyline, the Minster is one of the town's most architecturally important buildings and a remarkable building in the tradition of the great Minsters of Yorkshire. Amongst its treasures are a clock by Dent (the same designer the Palace of Westminster Clock more usually known as Big Ben), a spectacular 5 manual organ by the renowned German organ builder Edmund Schulze (1824-1877) and some stunning examples of Victorian stained glass. With something to suit all musical and cultural tastes, highlights from the programme include the Jubilee Jazz Concert with internationally acclaimed trombonist and Doncaster resident, Dennis Rollins performing in July; the month of March sees Elizabeth Watts, Winner of the 2007 Rosenblatt Recital Song Prize, in concert with Ensemble 360 Orchestra and the Choir of the Chapel Royal will be visiting in October. A summer season of lunchtime and evening organ recitals gets underway at the end of May and continues through to October. Performers include John Bird, Dorothea Harris, Philip Tordoff and Alan Spedding. A series of talks on subjects ranging from the Minster to the Sand House at Balby has been put together and provides a fascinating insight into the towns local history. Fun for all the family is catered for with the now annual Mediaeval Festival in June, Entertainment workshops in August, the Autumn Fayre in September and a Victorian Experience for all the Family in December.
